Serpent And Dove By Shelby Mahurin- Book Review
Lou is a witch on the run from her coven, Les Dames Blanches, and now she’s surviving as a thief, doing whatever it takes to stay hidden. But after a plan goes horribly wrong, she ends up in an unexpected situation—married to Reid Diggory, a Chasseur sworn to hunt down and kill witches. Reid has spent his life believing witches are evil, but as he and Lou are forced to be together, he starts to question everything he thought he knew. And Lou? She’s caught between the family she left behind and this new world of the Chasseurs, wondering who the real enemy actually is.
Lou is the kind of heroine I love—cocky, hilarious, and deeply vulnerable when it counts. She’s a total breath of fresh air. And Reid, oh Reid! His journey from rigid, rule-following soldier to someone questioning everything was so satisfying to watch unfold. I couldn’t help but compare his dynamic with Lou to Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows, and if you loved that slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers tension, you’re in for a treat.
I’d say this book leans more New Adult than Young Adult, with some mature themes, but it’s also packed with humor and sharp banter that balances out the darker elements. The pacing was spot-on—I was completely hooked, especially waiting for the moment when Reid would finally discover Lou’s secret. And let me tell you, that reveal was intense.
Other Things I Loved:
-
Ansel and Coco! Coco, Lou’s best friend, is another kind of witch and such a great character—loyal, fierce, and the perfect partner-in-crime. And Ansel? He’s a young Chasseur in training, but unlike the others, he’s kind, open-minded, and honestly, just precious. I loved his friendship with both Lou and Reid.
-
The twists! Just when I thought I had things figured out, the plot threw me for a loop. The last few chapters had me on edge, and I’m still thinking about everything that went down.
I’m practically counting the days until I can read Blood & Honey and see what happens next.
Final Thoughts
This was such a strong debut from Shelby Mahurin. If you love witches, romance, enemies-to-lovers, and a badass, snarky heroine, Serpent & Dove is absolutely worth picking up.
I have seen this book everywhere and everybody seems to like it, so I am super excited about it. Even more because this book is also translated into my language. It looks so amazing and also that cover is gorgeous.
