Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo |
Book Review
Initially, I hesitated because, you know, it's a bit darker than what I'm used to from the queen of the Grishaverse, but boy, was it worth the risk!
Though I anticipated some triggering themes, being a fan of Six of Crows and Shadow and Bone, I decided to give it a chance. Our girl, Galaxy "Alex" Stern, is an absolute powerhouse. Despite her haunted past and the whole seeing-ghosts gig, she's rocking that badassery with resilience and courage that had me cheering her on from page one. And can we talk about the dual perspective between Darlington and Alex? Genius move, Leigh!
The concept of secret societies at the School intrigued me. In the beginning, there was an overwhelming amount of information about each society, which got a little confusing. As the plot unfolded, the pieces started clicking into place, and suddenly, I was playing detective right alongside Alex.
Magic, oh, the magic! The Greys, aka the ghosts, were legit terrifying. Leigh Bardugo knows how to turn a casual ghost encounter into a spine-chilling, edge-of-your-seat experience. I swear, every time Alex encountered those Greys, I was practically hiding behind my book.
And that ending, folks! Leigh pulled a literary Houdini with those twists and turns. My jaw dropped, and I immediately had to consult the oracle of Goodreads for all the fan theories and speculations. What a ride!
